Craftsmanship worth talking about

RanD Remodeling is known for their attention to detail and high-level craftsmanship. Use the links below to learn about some projects that generated buzz after our builds.

Bringing the Stonewall Inn to Life

In 2024, the Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library in Fort Lauderdale called RanD Remodeling with an extraordinary request: help bring a replica of New York’s historic Stonewall Inn to life before its exhibit opened for Pride Month. There was one catch — opening day was less than a week away.

Donna and Roxanne traveled across Florida to meet with the museum’s director, hear his vision, and got to work. RanD Remodeling designed and built the bar and exhibit walls to create an immersive space. Even more impressive, the installation was constructed so two people could take it apart, pack it, and prepare it for travel.

The exhibit opened June 1, 2024 as part of the museum’s commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. We’re proud that our work helped visitors step into this important chapter of LGBTQ+ history.

Briefly describe your business or field

We are officially in the remodeling field. The remodeling field blends craftsmanship with technical expertise, creativity, and project management skill to transform existing spaces to meet client needs.

What initially drew you to this field? Describe your journey.

Roxanne has always been adept at fixing things and finding creative solutions. She had two uncles with construction businesses, so it seemed natural. When she was 19, a friend (Dieta Fisher) bought her a skill saw and a drill and asked her to do some projects and that was the start of what became her career. Donna’s mom was fearless when it came to remodeling. She would knock down walls without knowing exactly how to put them back up again.

She did everything herself, so Donna never had any fear of renovating. Donna’s professional career was in technology, but she loved fixing up old houses and was a “weekend warrior.” Since retiring from tech, Donna now devotes her time to her passion for making an impact on others through the work we do.

Are you in a male-dominated field? If so, describe your experience as a woman.

Absolutely! When Roxanne started (early 90’s), there were really no women in construction. She had to be better than the men just to be considered for a job or project. Most men didn’t respect women on the job site or their abilities, so she had the pressure to be better than them every day. That pressure shaped her into the perfectionist she is today.

A few things that we think differentiate women in this field are having more of an attention to detail, better customer relationships (customer care), and follow-through / communication.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Roxanne’s was from her dad: “You are always only going to be as good as your last job,” which drives her on every project.

Donna’s was from a leadership book: “To be happy and truly engaged, you have to find your “why” to understand what drives you and make sure you have that in your job.”

What advice would you share with women starting in your field?

So often, as women, we expect that if we work hard … someone will notice, and we will get our due. It doesn’t work like that. You need to look people in the eye and tell them what you want. If you want to move up the ladder, learn something, or think you deserve more compensation, whatever it is, you must ask. If you don’t ask, you don’t get! Since there are two of us, we’ll throw in one more: Do the work, put in the time and find someone good to learn from.

What has been your biggest frustration and success?

When you are a generalist, it takes a long time to feel like you’ve “made it.” That is frustrating but also rewarding once you do.

What has been your most memorable experience?

The Stonewall Inn exhibit. Build the Stonewall Inn exhibit was not only the most memorable experience but also the most gratifying. We’ve never impacted as many people as we did when we built the exhibit, and we could not be more thrilled to have been involved.
